Counselling and Psychotherapy
Counselling and psychotherapy are general terms that cover a range of talking therapies designed to help people overcome emotional problems and bring about effective and lasting changes in their lives.
Who can benefit from Counselling and Psychotherapy?
The short answer is probably most of us! It is a myth to think that you have to be “crazy” to benefit from counselling or psychotherapy. The reality is the vast majority of people, undergoing some form of counselling or psychotherapy do so simply because they are experiencing difficulties and problems with situations that occur in their everyday lives. The stress caused by these issues can sometimes seem overwhelming, and may make a person feel that they are unable to cope with the pressures of life. Counselling or psychotherapy at our clinic in Maidstone can help one to take back control of your life and be able view problems from a clearer perspective.
All of us experience emotionally challenging times in our lives through events like relationship difficulties, bereavement, divorce, redundancy, health issues etc. and many people find it helpful to talk about such personal issues with a trained professional. Friends and family are often too close to a situation and generally know us too well to be totally impartial. You also don’t need to be in crisis situation before seeking help; you can just be feeling anxious, stressed and dissatisfied with the way you seem to be coping with life.
What sort of therapy might help me?
Counselling is used more for issues affecting you now that are related to the present. For example you might choose counselling if you have suffered a bereavement, a sudden stress or life change such as a separation or divorce, a career change, a move of home, family discord or anything else happening presently that is causing you distress or emotional pain.
Counselling helps you identify problems and encourages you to take positive steps to resolve these issues. Counselling is generally a short-term process that helps you to restore balance and perspective to your life.
Psychotherapy is used when problems that are having a negative impact on our wellbeing and enjoyment of life maybe due to deeper issues related to past events or experiences in our lives. These might be due to physical trauma or abuse, acute depression, eating disorders, obsessive behaviour etc. These problems have often built up over the course of a long period of time. Psychotherapy can help you understand your feelings, thoughts and actions more clearly and so lead a happy and more fulfilled life.
